What goes beyond ISO 9001

More audit types, higher cadence. System, process and product audits sit alongside each other, and manufacturing processes must be covered across all shifts. What a plain ISO 9001 certification manages with a handful of audits per year quickly becomes a programme with audits in the hundreds. At that scale the programme level stops being a convenience and becomes the precondition for keeping an overview.

Formalised problem solving. A documented process with root cause analysis and verification of effectiveness is required. The 8D report is the industry’s established implementation — with a team, containment, separate causal chains and formal closure.

Density of evidence. Customer-specific requirements from the manufacturers come on top of the standard and are audited alongside it. Evidence therefore has to be retrievable quickly.

What that means for the toolchain

Three requirements follow directly: an audit programme level that carries audit counts in the hundreds; a root cause analysis that follows the 8D flow rather than reproducing it as a form; and action tracking that enforces the effectiveness check rather than permitting it.

How qportal covers this is described on the audit management, root cause analysis and action management pages.

Frequently asked questions

Does IATF 16949 replace ISO 9001?
No. IATF 16949 is a supplement applied only together with ISO 9001. All ISO 9001 requirements continue to apply; the IATF adds automotive-specific requirements.
Which additional audit types does the IATF require?
Alongside the system audit, the IATF explicitly requires process audits and product audits, as well as audits of manufacturing processes across all shifts. That raises both the number and the cadence of audits considerably compared with plain ISO 9001 certification.
Is the 8D report mandatory?
The IATF requires a documented problem-solving process with root cause analysis and verification of effectiveness, but names no specific method. In practice most vehicle manufacturers require an 8D report in their customer-specific requirements, which makes it the de facto standard.
