Six years in quality management

From 2017 to 2023 I worked in quality management at manufacturing companies — first as quality officer in an electronics manufacturing business, from late 2018 as head of quality and management representative (QMB), most recently at a textile machinery manufacturer.

The daily work was what this site keeps coming back to: developing the ISO 9001 system, running internal audits, preparing and accompanying external audits, coordinating customer and supplier complaints and writing the 8D reports for them, supporting first-article sampling, building internal reporting and training staff.

The qualifications behind it come from TÜV SÜD Akademie: quality management representative (QMB), quality management specialist (QMF) and quality management auditor (QMA).

What I kept running into

Not a lack of knowledge of the standards, but breaks in the toolchain. The audit plan lived in a spreadsheet, the question catalogue in a document, the findings in a report, the actions in yet another list — and the 8D report for the customer in a template that had nothing to do with any of it. Each step was fine on its own; the connection between them was missing. By the next audit at the latest, someone would ask whether last year’s action had actually worked, and someone else had to piece the answer together.

I know the auditee’s side just as well: gathering evidence two weeks before the audit date that should have been accumulating all along.

From quality manager to SAP developer

Alongside heading quality, I was local rollout coordinator in an SAP implementation project from 2021 to 2023: coordinating key users, data migration and cleansing, supporting tests, preparing the site for go-live. That is where I saw how much processes improve once they live in a system rather than in spreadsheets — and how little of that reaches quality management.

Since October 2023 I have worked as an SAP consultant, first on data modelling in BW/4HANA, dashboards in SAP Analytics Cloud, UI5 applications on SAP BTP and backend development with ABAP RAP. Since 2025 I have been technical lead for a B2B portal in the SAP cloud: architecture, API design and security, full-stack development with CAP, Node.js and SAPUI5, code reviews and development guidelines for the team — on projects for well-known consumer-goods brands.

That is why qportal is built on SAP BTP with CAP and Fiori Elements — not out of enthusiasm for the stack, but because security, multi-tenancy and an established interaction model then do not have to be built from scratch.

Why I write what I write

The articles in this blog come out of the same practice. They cite primary sources — standards and accreditation bodies, the IATF, the VDA — because I regularly came across quality management texts that render requirements of the standards inaccurately. Where an article goes beyond my own experience, IATF 16949 for instance, it rests on the documents of the responsible bodies and says so. If you spot an error somewhere, write to me — I am glad to correct it.

Current status
